OperStack vs an SEO agency: weekly checks and fixes for $35

OperStack Watch gives an owner 10 weekly buyer questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity, 3 rival comparisons, repeated page checks and reports showing changes with proposed fixes for $35 monthly. An agency can take responsibility for implementing work and broader promotion; the services differ. Watch supplies a recurring record and concrete editing tasks the owner or an existing contractor can review, with a free check to start.

OperStack is our product. We compare documented scope and prices, with sources and limits shown below.

Choose OperStack if

  • You want to know every week whether ChatGPT and Perplexity name you and who they name instead, for $35 a month or $299 a year, with no contract to sit out.
  • You will paste the fixes yourself: each arrives with the page address and text built only from your own pages, and Google says a small local business can do much of this work alone.
  • You want a first look before spending anything: the free check needs no signup, no Search Console access and no call, and shows ChatGPT's answers to three buyer questions.
  • You want an outside number to hold an agency to, before you hire one or while you pay one.

When an agency is the better choice

  • You need someone to write pages, fix redirects and JavaScript, or run a redesign or migration.
  • You need keyword research, link building and rank tracking carried out for you.

What you get for $35: one real week of OperStack Watch

This is the actual first report for a Phuket property brand we run, run on 26 September 2026 by the same code subscribers get. We hide the brand name because it is our own site, not a client.

Watch keeps this work going every 7 days: the same 10 buyer questions, the businesses named in the answers, 3 rivals measured beside your site and repeated page checks. Later reports compare the new observation with the previous week and include proposed fixes for the pages checked. You review and publish the changes.

For the question "Top firms to help foreign buyers evaluate Phuket developments before reservation?"

Add this to your homepage, just below the first section.

brand helps foreign buyers compare Phuket property before reservation with a three-project shortlist matched to budget and use, plus checked construction status and buyer review. Featured projects include Origin Residences Bang Tao, So Origin Bangtao Beach and Essence Residence Rawai. We provide verified inventory and transparent prices for the main investment districts, with median prices from our price list. We also show a 0% interest construction payment plan with 20% down, 30% during construction and 50% on completion, and Thai bank mortgage terms of up to 15 years with 50% down payment required.

Before you publish: add the words "developments" to this paragraph if you sell them.

Every sentence in the paragraph comes from the site's own pages; the tool checks each one against a quote before it goes in. Answers change from run to run, so Watch asks the same ten questions every week and shows the trend. Seven days free, then $35 a month.

What do OperStack and an SEO agency do?

OperStack Watch supplies 10 weekly buyer questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity, page checks and proposed edits for $35 monthly; the owner publishes the changes. An SEO agency sells human work under an agreed scope. Comparing them is mainly a decision about implementation capacity, with published provider surveys giving context rather than a quote for your site.

  1. A year costs less than one month of a typical retainer. Watch is $35 a month, or $299 for twelve months. In the Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers, the most common monthly retainer band was $501 to $1,000. A full year of Watch therefore costs less than the bottom of that band for a single month.

  2. It measures the thing you are worried about. Every week Watch puts the same ten buyer questions to ChatGPT and Perplexity with web search on, records a yes or a no for each, and lists every firm named in your place with a count. How an agency measures ChatGPT answers, if it does, is up to each agency: no named survey we found even states what share of small-business agencies offer AI-search work.

  3. The first look is free and needs no access. Our free check takes your web address and nothing else: no signup, nothing to install, no Search Console permissions, no call. It scores up to ten pages and shows what ChatGPT said in reply to three buyer questions. Backlinko, by contrast, lists site audits among standard agency projects at $1,000 to $5,000, and Google advises giving any auditor read access to Search Console only.

  4. The text comes from your own pages. Each paragraph OperStack drafts is assembled from what your site already says, and every sentence is checked against a quote from your pages before it is allowed in. Google warns that deceptive or misleading content created for you by an SEO can get your site removed from its index. Our rule is built to avoid exactly that: nothing enters the draft that your own pages do not already support.

  5. Nothing is hidden. Google lists secrecy, an SEO that will not clearly explain what it intends to do, among its warning signs. A Watch letter shows each question asked, each name ChatGPT and Perplexity gave, the score and the fix, so every line can be checked by you.

  6. No term to sit out. Watch cancels at any time, and inside the first 7 days nothing is charged. Clutch says the usual SEO engagement in its verified reviews runs 12 months, and Ahrefs found 78.2% of providers bill by monthly retainer.

  7. No developer. Writing fixes can be pasted into a page you already edit. The few that need code are marked, so you know exactly what to hand on and what to do yourself.

What does an SEO agency do, and what does OperStack do?

An agency works on your site and your wider search presence; OperStack watches one assistant and tells you what to fix.

An SEO agency: people working on your site

Google’s page “Do you need an SEO?”, last updated 5 June 2026, lists what an SEO typically offers: a review of your content or site structure; technical advice on hosting, redirects, error pages and JavaScript; content development; management of online business development campaigns; keyword research; SEO training; expertise in particular markets and geographies; and optimizing for generative AI. What a retainer buys depends on its size. Backlinko’s tiers run from basic on-page work and simple reporting at $500 or less, through technical fixes and content suggestions at $501 to $1,000, to content creation and basic link building at $1,001 to $2,500, and custom strategy with dedicated specialists above $5,000.

OperStack: a weekly reading and the words to change

OperStack Watch reads ten of your pages and scores them out of 100, measures three rivals on the same scale, asks ChatGPT and Perplexity ten buyer questions and sends one email every seven days with what changed. Each report proposes one priority fix from the sampled pages: the page address, the text, and a flag if this task needs a developer. OperStack is not an agency and does not edit your site. If you want the work done, we quote services separately, and only once the list of work has been agreed in writing.

Daydream

Daydream, run by daydream Labs, Inc., is one agency that sells AI search work. Its site describes seven levers, from keyword strategy, technical health, editorial and programmatic SEO and authority building to AI visibility, delivered by AI agents together with dedicated experts. A Growth Lead owns execution, with weekly production cycles, monthly performance reviews and quarterly strategy check-ins. On 3 October 2026 the site showed no public price, and none of the 67 addresses in its sitemap was a pricing page. The way in is “Book a call”; if there is a fit, Daydream runs a full strategy audit and shows what it would do before you commit. It also offers a free AI visibility dashboard requested with a work email. Watch is a different purchase: a fixed $35 a month for a weekly reading and draft text, with no team doing the work for you.

How much does an SEO agency cost per month in 2026?

Agency prices vary by scope and provider. Ahrefs’ 439-provider survey reported $501 to $1,000 as its most common monthly retainer band; that mixed sample is not a current small-business quote. Watch costs $35 monthly or $299 annually. The table separates survey evidence, calculated annual amounts and actual published product prices.

Treat the Ahrefs averages with care: Ahrefs computed them by assuming every respondent charges the top of the band they picked, so real averages are likely lower. Ahrefs also reports the spread: 42.8% of providers charge $501 to $2,000 a month, 68.8% charge $2,000 or less, and providers who serve a local market average $1,557.08. Backlinko puts established small businesses with simple websites in the $501 to $1,000 tier.

Over a year, using plain arithmetic on those figures:

The WebFX row needs its label. WebFX is itself an agency, and its ranges, published 26 May 2026, were gathered “from across the web” rather than from a survey. No independent named survey we found gives a typical price for AI-search work, or says what share of small-business agencies sell it. Watch and its $299 annual option are on our pricing page.

What do SEO agencies charge per hour and per project?

Hourly rates cluster between $75 and $150 and one-off projects most often cost $2,501 to $5,000, but the Ahrefs article gives two different answers for the most common hourly rate.

In its survey section, Ahrefs says $75 to $100 an hour is the most popular rate, picked by 24% of respondents. The summary box at the top of the same article says the most common rate is $100 to $150, at 25%. They cannot both be the most common. We report both and lean on the survey section, which carries the breakdown. The rest is consistent: 90% of Ahrefs respondents charge $150 an hour or less, only 4.1% charge $201 or more, and by type consultants average $171.18, agencies $98.90 and freelancers $71.59. Backlinko finds $50 to $100 the usual global band, averaging $75 an hour in the US, UK and Australia. Clutch says most agencies it lists charge $100 to $149.

For one-off work, obtain a quote naming the pages, research and implementation included. A whole SEO engagement and a report without implementation are different purchases, even when both suppliers use the word audit.

Our one-off option is the $149 full audit. It covers 100 pages and five rivals, a person reviews it, the files come ready to use, there is no subscription, and the fee comes back in full if you cancel before we start collecting data. Its scope is AI visibility; an agency audit in the thousands is priced for a wider job, classic SEO included.

How does each one find out whether ChatGPT names you?

Watch records 10 buyer questions and checks a sample of pages each week. An agency’s AI method depends on its agreed scope, so request the questions, engines and reporting frequency in writing. A dated method makes its recommendations reviewable and lets you distinguish a monitoring service from implementation work.

Google’s interview list includes “How do you measure your success?” and “Will you share all the changes you make and the reasoning behind them?”. For AI search, a good answer names the assistant, the exact questions, how often they are asked and what counts as a mention. If an agency reports only Google rankings and traffic, a weekly ChatGPT and Perplexity reading fills a gap rather than duplicating its work. For what Google’s own free tool can and cannot show here, see OperStack vs Google Search Console.

Not to find out where you stand. Google’s own hiring page says that if you run a small local business, “you can probably do much of the work yourself”, starting with its SEO Starter Guide.

The same page now names “optimizing for generative AI” among the services an SEO may sell, and it tells owners to check that any AEO or GEO advice agrees with Google’s official guidance on generative AI features. That gives you a simple test for any pitch: ask which Google document the advice rests on.

No named source in this review establishes a deadline for appearing in ChatGPT after an edit. An agency proposal should therefore specify work, observation dates and evidence, rather than a promised recommendation date.

What does each one hand you on a Monday morning?

An agency can supply completed edits and reporting if both are in the contract. Watch sends 1 weekly email with findings and proposed text, leaving publication to you. Before buying either, identify who can change the website and how that person will record approval, publication and follow-up.

OperStack Watch can supply an agency relationship with a continuing record of 10 buyer questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity, the businesses named in the answers and 3 rivals measured beside your site. It also repeats page checks and attaches proposed wording to recorded issues. Later reports compare observations with the preceding week, making it possible to revisit a question after an approved edit. That record can become a specific agency task if the contract includes implementation. Ask the account manager to confirm the affected URL, the text that was approved and the date it became public. Keep any reason for declining a proposed change too, particularly where legal or professional review is required. The software’s role is to supply observations and suggestions; the agency’s responsibility depends on its agreement. A change in recommendations deserves investigation, but neither party should claim that one edit caused more revenue without separate evidence.

  1. Confirm whether implementation is included in the agency agreement.
  2. Ask for the approved text and actual publication date.
  3. Keep the agency response with the following Watch reports.

When you need a different kind of tool

An SEO agency can supply people who research, write and implement changes under a contract. That matters if nobody in the business will edit the site. Watch costs $35 monthly and supplies observations plus draft fixes, so the value depends on someone being available to review and publish the work.

  1. Hire implementation help for a redesign, migration or technical repair whose scope exceeds a text edit.
  2. Specify keyword research, outreach or rank reporting when those are required deliverables. They are absent from the Watch subscription.
  3. Ask who approves regulated claims, who can publish, and who restores an earlier page if a change is wrong. Those responsibilities need named people.

A useful arrangement combines the Watch email with a separately agreed publishing task. The fee then buys identifiable work rather than an assumed improvement in a score or an unspecified promise of visibility.

Should a clinic, a marketing agency, a SaaS company or a shop hire an SEO agency?

Across 4 business types, choose by implementation need. A clinic may edit its own service pages; an agency has client approvals; a SaaS team can assign work internally; a shop may face complex catalogue changes. Watch supplies a weekly observation and draft, while agency work requires a separate agreed deliverable.

  1. A dental or aesthetics practice. With a single site, a practice is the small local business Google says can do much of the work itself. Start with Watch at $35 a month and paste the fixes yourself. Bring in an agency for a redesign, and budget with Ahrefs’ local-market average of $1,557.08 a month in mind.

  2. A marketing agency with ten clients. Here you are the agency, and the question is what you measure with. Watch gives each client a weekly reading from ChatGPT and Perplexity and text your team can ship; ten subscriptions come to $350 a month, and our pricing page lists no bundle. Our free MCP server scores sites and compares two to four of them on one scale from inside Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, which helps in a pitch. Keep your suite for keywords and links; OperStack vs Ahrefs and OperStack vs Semrush explain that split.

  3. A SaaS company. If growth depends on ranking for many keywords, that takes research, content and links, which is agency or in-house work. For AI answers, Watch tells you each week whether ChatGPT and Perplexity name your product when a buyer asks for tools in your category, and which products they name instead.

  4. An online shop. Shops carry the technical risks on Google’s list, redirects, error pages and JavaScript, most of all during a platform move, and that is a job for an agency. Day to day, Watch shows whether ChatGPT and Perplexity mention the shop and supplies plain text for the pages they read.

Can you keep your agency and add OperStack?

You can retain an agency and use Watch’s 10-question series as an additional observation. Share a specific edit request and ask for its publication date, while preserving the original report. If ending a contract, arrange access and records first; recurring software does not replace the person doing the work.

Forward each letter to your account manager. It names the page and gives the words, so the agency’s hours go on implementation rather than diagnosis. Because the same ten questions come back every week, you also get a trend line that neither you nor the agency produced, which makes the monthly review more honest.

If you are leaving an agency and doing it yourself:

  1. Read the notice clause. No named survey states a standard contract length or notice period. Clutch says the usual engagement in its reviews lasts twelve months; agency blogs such as SEO Sherpa mention six to twelve. SEO Sherpa adds that many agencies start at twelve months and later roll into month-to-month agreements.
  2. Ask for the change log. Google tells owners to expect an SEO to share every change and its reasoning. Get that list before access ends.
  3. Take back access. Remove the agency’s logins to Search Console, analytics and your site once the handover is complete.
  4. Take a baseline, then start Watch. Run the free check the same week. Watch’s first 7 days cost nothing; a paid period is not refunded, as our refunds page explains.

How do you vet an SEO agency? Google’s questions and red flags

Google’s hiring page gives both a set of questions to ask and a list of warning signs. Use both before you sign, and keep an independent measurement running afterwards.

Ask for examples of previous work and success stories. Ask whether the agency follows Google Search Essentials, what results it expects and in what timeframe, how it measures success, and what experience it has in your industry, your country or city, and with international sites. Ask how long it has been in business, how you will communicate, and whether it will share every change with its reasoning. A good agency asks you questions too: what makes your business different, who your competitors are, how customers find you. Call its references. For an audit, grant read access to Search Console, never write access.

Google’s warning signs:

  1. An SEO firm that emails you out of the blue.
  2. Any promise of first place on Google; Google says no one can promise that.
  3. Claims of a “special relationship” with Google, or a “priority submit”.
  4. Secrecy about what the agency intends to do.
  5. Deceptive or misleading content created on your behalf.
  6. A request that you link to the agency: “You should never have to link to an SEO.”
  7. Link popularity schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines.
  8. Tools that claim to be approved by Google Search.
  9. A request for write access to Search Console at the audit stage.

Google adds that you are responsible for what any company you hire does in your name. In the US, complaints go to the FTC; elsewhere, to econsumer.gov.

A number neither side controls makes all of this easier. Run the free check before the first call and again three months in: it asks ChatGPT three buyer questions and scores your pages without touching your accounts, so an agency’s AI-search claims meet an outside reading. For the manual route, OperStack vs asking ChatGPT yourself covers what a one-off question misses.

What our early sample suggests asking an agency to review

Our early sample of September 2026 recorded missing opening answers in 3 service categories at different rates: 47% of sampled property sites, 44% of dental sites and 35% of law sites. Those findings suggest pages to inspect. They do not show whether an agency worked on a site or whether that agency performed poorly. Full study: 731 checks.

Source: the OperStack early sample of 25 September 2026, with 496 scored small-business websites overall across four English-speaking markets. Each category figure concerns the sampled pages on those websites, not every page in the sector or a measured rate of lost enquiries.

CategorySites with no qualifying opening in their sample
Property services47%
Dental practices44%
Law firms35%

Bring a concrete page to an agency review rather than accusing a supplier from a score alone. Ask what question the opening answers, where each claim is supported and whether the current contract includes rewriting it. If the work is outside scope, request a separately priced task with approval and publication responsibilities.

A dental page illustrates why judgement is necessary. Adding a treatment deadline to satisfy a numerical rule would be inappropriate without evidence. A truthful opening might use an already published appointment price or a defined service area, but the practice must confirm that it remains accurate and suitable to publish.

Watch supplies observations and proposed wording that can help prepare that conversation. Keep the agency’s implementation record beside the report, with the approved text and publication date. The next observation can show that an answer changed; attributing the change to one edit requires more evidence than this site study provides.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an SEO agency cost per month?
In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, the most common retainer was $501 to $1,000 a month, chosen by 20.4%, and 68.8% charged $2,000 or less. Agencies averaged $3,209 a month and freelancers $1,348. Clutch, drawing on 65,550 companies, put the average monthly SEO project at $3,199.19 in September 2026. Backlinko's survey of 300+ professionals found $1,001 to $2,500 the most common tier.
Do I need an SEO agency for AI search?
Not to find out where you stand. Google's own page on hiring an SEO says a small local business can probably do much of the work itself, starting with the SEO Starter Guide. Google now lists optimizing for generative AI among SEO services and tells owners to check that any AEO or GEO advice matches its guidance. OperStack Watch measures ChatGPT and Perplexity answers weekly for $35 a month.
What are the red flags when hiring an SEO agency?
Google lists them: SEO firms that email you out of the blue, promises of first place, claims of a special relationship with Google or a priority submit, secrecy about their plans, deceptive content made in your name, requests that you link to them, link schemes, tools said to be approved by Google, and asking for write access to Search Console during an audit.
How much do SEO agencies charge per hour?
It depends on whose figures you read. The Ahrefs survey section names $75 to $100 an hour as the most popular rate (24%), while the summary box on the same page says $100 to $150 (25%). Ninety percent of Ahrefs respondents charge $150 or less. Clutch says most agencies it lists charge $100 to $149; Backlinko averages $75 in the US, UK and Australia.
How long does SEO take to show results?
Google's SEO Starter Guide says some changes take effect within hours and others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging a change. An Ahrefs study of a million new pages found only 1.74% reached Google's top ten within a year. No named source we found gives a timeframe for being named by ChatGPT, which is why a weekly measurement helps.
Can OperStack replace an SEO agency?
For AI visibility it replaces the measuring and the diagnosis: each week it asks ChatGPT and Perplexity ten buyer questions, names who is recommended instead of you and writes the text for the right page, for $35 a month. It does not replace the hands. It will not edit your site, research keywords, build links or track rankings. You paste the fixes yourself or forward the letter to whoever edits the site.
How long are SEO agency contracts?
No named survey states a typical contract length or notice period. Clutch says the usual SEO engagement in its verified client reviews lasts 12 months, and Ahrefs found 78.2% of providers bill by monthly retainer. Agency blogs often mention six to twelve months, but that is not survey data, and month-to-month retainers exist. OperStack Watch has no term and cancels at any time.
