OperStack vs Semrush: ChatGPT and Perplexity checks and written fixes for $35

OperStack Watch combines 10 weekly buyer questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity, 3 rival comparisons, repeated page checks and reports showing changes with proposed fixes for $35 monthly. Semrush’s standalone AI Visibility Toolkit starts at $99 for 25 tracked prompts. For an owner who wants a continuing routine from observation to page improvement, Watch brings the findings and the next editing task together in each report.

OperStack is our product. We compare documented scope and prices, with sources and limits shown below.

Choose OperStack if

  • You want the names ChatGPT and Perplexity recommend instead of you, and the paragraph to paste on the right page, every week.
  • You want AI visibility for $35 a month or $299 a year, not a $99 add-on or a $199 suite.
  • You want ChatGPT's live answer before you pay: the free check asks three buyer questions with no signup.
  • Nobody on your team does SEO: most fixes are text to paste, and the few that need a developer are marked.

When Semrush is the better choice

  • You need keyword volumes and a backlink index for an SEO team.
  • You track Google rankings for hundreds of keywords every day.
  • You run technical audits on sites with tens of thousands of pages.

What you get for $35: one real week of OperStack Watch

This is the actual first report for a Phuket property brand we run, run on 26 September 2026 by the same code subscribers get. We hide the brand name because it is our own site, not a client.

Watch keeps this work going every 7 days: the same 10 buyer questions, the businesses named in the answers, 3 rivals measured beside your site and repeated page checks. Later reports compare the new observation with the previous week and include proposed fixes for the pages checked. You review and publish the changes.

5 of 10buyer questions where ChatGPT named the site

The fix of the week, as it arrived

For the question "Top firms to help foreign buyers evaluate Phuket developments before reservation?"

Add this to your homepage, just below the first section.

brand helps foreign buyers compare Phuket property before reservation with a three-project shortlist matched to budget and use, plus checked construction status and buyer review. Featured projects include Origin Residences Bang Tao, So Origin Bangtao Beach and Essence Residence Rawai. We provide verified inventory and transparent prices for the main investment districts, with median prices from our price list. We also show a 0% interest construction payment plan with 20% down, 30% during construction and 50% on completion, and Thai bank mortgage terms of up to 15 years with 50% down payment required.

Before you publish: add the words "developments" to this paragraph if you sell them.

Every sentence in the paragraph comes from the site's own pages; the tool checks each one against a quote before it goes in. Answers change from run to run, so Watch asks the same ten questions every week and shows the trend. Seven days free, then $35 a month.

What are OperStack and Semrush for?

OperStack Watch asks ChatGPT and Perplexity 10 questions weekly, checks sampled pages and sends draft fixes for $35 monthly. Semrush combines SEO research with AI products, including a standalone $99 AI Visibility Toolkit. The useful distinction is what your team needs to do after reading the report, alongside its required engine coverage.

OperStack: ChatGPT’s answer about you, turned into this week’s work

The free check needs your address and nothing else: no account, nothing to install. It reads up to ten pages sampled from your sitemap and scores them out of 100 across five areas. Access is worth 25 points (robots.txt read per user agent for 14 AI crawlers and fetchers), the agent map 15 (llms.txt), the entity 20 (business schema, FAQPage, canonical, Open Graph), quotable content 25 (an answer-first paragraph with a figure under the H1, three or more H2 sections, a table) and dates and sources 15. Then it puts three questions a buyer of that kind of business would ask to ChatGPT, with web search on, and shows whether you were named and who was named instead.

OperStack Watch makes that a weekly routine for $35 a month. Every week: ten questions your buyers ask, the businesses ChatGPT and Perplexity recommended in your place, three rivals measured beside you, your ten-page score measured again, and one priority fix chosen from the sampled pages, with the page address and proposed text to review. One email a week tells you what moved.

Where does OperStack do more than Semrush for AI visibility?

On the narrow job of getting a business named in ChatGPT, OperStack goes further than Semrush’s AI module in seven concrete ways, for about a third of the price of the cheapest Semrush option. Each point is checked against Semrush’s own pages as they stood on 3 October 2026.

  1. It writes the paragraph, from your own pages. When a checked page has no short answer at the top, the free check drafts a ready-to-paste opening paragraph for that exact page, built only from what your site already says, with a “Copy the text” button. Watch repeats this for the sampled pages: page address first, then the text. Semrush’s Site Audit lists issues with how-to-fix advice, and its Content Toolkit, a separate $60 a month, writes articles and briefs. A ready-to-paste opening for a specific page you already have is not stated on any Semrush page we read.

  2. It names who ChatGPT picked instead of you. Not a share-of-voice percentage but the names from the answer itself. The free check splits them three ways: real rivals, businesses that are not rivals at all (a portal, a law firm handling the paperwork), and names ChatGPT gave that could not be matched to anything, so directories can be reviewed separately from suggested competitors. Semrush’s Competitor Research compares you with up to four competitors, and its AI Visibility Score is benchmarked against competitors Semrush chooses automatically.

  3. The free check asks ChatGPT live, with no signup. Semrush’s free AI Visibility Checker reads a pre-collected prompt database, and Semrush itself says results can differ when you test prompts yourself. Ours asks three buyer questions while you wait, three runs per connection per day, and gives the result a permanent link you can forward to whoever edits the site.

  4. $35 a month against $99 or $199. Watch is $35 a month or $299 a year. The cheapest Semrush option that tracks prompts you write is the AI Visibility Toolkit at $99 a month, with 25 prompts and no free trial. The cheapest suite plan with custom prompts is Starter at $199. What Watch includes is listed on the pricing page.

  5. One letter a week that says what changed. Watch mails you once every seven days, starting from your subscription date, and the letter leads with what is different from the previous week. Semrush can schedule PDF reports daily, weekly or monthly, but you assemble them yourself in My Reports, and each plan includes three Base reports.

  6. Written for the person who edits the website. Writing fixes include text to review and paste, and those that need a developer are marked as such, so a clinic manager or a shop owner can act on the list without an SEO analyst translating it. We found no general statement from Semrush on how much skill its platform needs; it offers a free training session after you start a trial.

  7. The first week costs nothing, and you can stop any time. Within the first seven days of Watch you pay nothing; after you cancel you are not charged again, and only periods already paid for stay unrefunded. Semrush cancels through a form while you are logged in, then asks you to click a confirmation link within 24 hours, or billing continues. Its monthly plans and renewals are not refundable.

How much does Semrush cost per year for AI visibility?

Semrush’s standalone AI Visibility Toolkit cost $99 monthly on 3 October 2026, or $1,188 across twelve payments. The Starter suite cost $199 monthly and included a larger prompt allowance. Watch costs $35 monthly or $299 annually. Use the standalone toolkit as the entry comparison, not the more expensive bundle.

OperStack Watch$35$2997 daysAt checkoutEverything: ten questions a week, names, fix text

Three notes on how we read those figures:

The Semrush bill also grows with use. Fifty more prompts cost $60 a month; each extra domain or location in Brand Performance costs $99 a month; each additional user starts at $45 a month ($80 on Pro+, $100 on Advanced). Article writing is a separate product, the Content Toolkit, at another $60 a month. Watch is $35 a month or $299 a year with the first week free, as the pricing page shows.

Is the free Semrush AI Visibility Checker enough?

It gives you a quick number for a domain, not an answer to your own buyers’ questions. Type a domain and, three times a day without an account, Semrush shows an AI Visibility Score from 0 to 100, mentions, citations, a split by platform, top cited pages and a comparison with competitors. The data comes from Semrush’s stored collection of “26M+ prompts and responses”, not from questions you choose.

The OperStack free check reads your own pages and asks fresh. You get three buyer-style questions put to ChatGPT with web search on, the names it gave, one fix written out in full (what to do now, the task, how to check it), a count of the other findings, and a paste-ready opening for any checked page that lacks one. A repeat of the same site within 24 hours shows the saved answer, so two people looking at the same link see the same result.

How does Semrush check AI answers, and how does OperStack?

Semrush offers 25 tracked prompts in its standalone toolkit and 50 in Starter, with multiple AI features and data sources. Watch puts 10 questions to ChatGPT and Perplexity weekly and checks sampled pages. Keep those data sources separate when interpreting the results: a prompt database, a fresh answer and a website inspection are different evidence.

Semrush’s help pages do not agree on which AI systems each tool covers. The Prompt Tracking article names ChatGPT Search, AI Mode and Gemini; the Semrush One article assigns AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT to Prompt Tracking and a different four to Brand Performance; the subscriptions article lists yet another set for Starter.

Watch’s weekly questions go to ChatGPT and Perplexity only, with web search on. The free check separately reads robots.txt for 14 AI crawlers and fetchers and shows readiness per engine, so you learn whether other assistants’ bots are allowed in, but Watch does not put questions to Claude or Gemini.

The fix is where the approaches split most clearly. A Semrush dashboard tells a trained analyst where visibility is weak, and the analyst decides what to rewrite. Watch’s priority fix covers that step for one page each week, building the paragraph from sentences your own pages already support; that is why the example week above arrived with a note to check one word before publishing.

What does each tool tell a business owner on Monday morning?

Watch sends 1 email each week with its question results, page findings and suggested edits. Semrush has dashboards and configurable scheduled reports with their own limits. Either output needs someone to choose and approve the work; Watch places the proposed paragraph beside the finding to make that decision easier.

OperStack Watch repeatedly asks ChatGPT and Perplexity 10 buyer questions, records the named businesses and measures 3 rivals alongside your site. Its weekly page checks identify issues to review, and subsequent emails compare the new observations with the previous report. The proposed text gives that continuing comparison a practical next step: a page and wording the owner can approve. A team using Semrush can keep its wider research and assign the Watch email to the person responsible for page improvements. Avoid creating two reporting routines with nobody accountable for the action. Store the approved paragraph and publication date beside the question record, then inspect later observations on their own terms. A changed readiness score shows that the checker saw different page features; a changed mention count concerns sampled answers. Neither should be presented as the number of potential customers reached or as a measured return on the subscription.

  1. Keep keyword research with the person who uses it.
  2. Assign the Watch suggestion to the editor of that page.
  3. Compare the later question record with the dated publishing log.

When you need a different kind of tool

Semrush combines keyword research, backlink data, rank tracking and larger technical audits. Starter lists 500 tracked keywords and 100,000 monthly crawl pages in the reviewed pricing materials. Those capabilities serve work outside Watch’s weekly ChatGPT and Perplexity questions, and a team actively using them may have a reason to retain the suite.

  1. Plan keyword-led content using a dataset with demand, location and collection details. OperStack has no keyword volumes.
  2. Investigate links in a backlink tool. Watch’s named rivals are extracted from sampled answers, not a link index.
  3. Audit catalogue templates and migrations with coverage appropriate to the number of URLs. A ten-page sample cannot certify an entire store.

Our weekly report adds a smaller, assignable page task. It is useful when that task has an owner and the proposed wording can be checked against current business facts before publication.

Semrush or OperStack for a dental clinic, a ten-client agency, a SaaS team or a store?

A clinic, a 10-client agency, a SaaS team and a shop differ in the work behind their reports. Watch offers a narrow weekly ChatGPT and Perplexity routine. Semrush supplies wider search research and monitoring. Decide which questions need repeated observation and who will use keyword, backlink or catalogue data before buying both.

For the AI visibility question, all four start with OperStack; Semrush earns its place only where the business also runs keyword and ranking work.

  1. A clinic owner

A dental or aesthetics clinic usually has one site, no marketer and one question: when a patient asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for a clinic in the area, is ours on the list? In Semrush that means a project, a prompt list and a dashboard, at $99 a month for 25 prompts. The free check answers it today, and Watch repeats it weekly with the clinics named instead and the paragraph for the page patients land on. If the clinic already pays an agency that works in Semrush, keep the agency and use Watch as an independent weekly view of the ChatGPT and Perplexity side.

  1. An agency with ten clients

Keep Semrush for the SEO deliverables it was built for; the AI side is where its bill climbs. Starter includes one domain for AI brand performance, and the toolkit article prices each extra Brand Performance domain or location at $99 a month. OperStack gives an agency four pieces instead: the free check to open a pitch with the names ChatGPT gave in place of the prospect, the free MCP server to compare two to four sites on one scale inside Claude or Cursor, the $149 full audit to onboard a client (a hundred pages, five rivals, ready files, reviewed by a person, no subscription), and Watch for the clients whose leads depend on being named.

  1. A SaaS company

SaaS buyers ask ChatGPT and Perplexity for shortlists: tools that do X for teams like Y. Watch puts ten buyer questions to both every week, lists the products named instead of yours, then writes the opening your product page is missing. A content team chasing blog keywords may still want a suite for that work; for the shortlist itself, Watch is the direct route at $35 against $99 for the standalone AI Visibility Toolkit. Developer-led teams can run the free MCP tools in the same editor they write code in. For how dedicated AI trackers approach the same question, see OperStack vs Profound.

  1. An online shop

Shoppers ask assistants where to buy a product and which store to trust. Watch shows whether your store is named, which shops were named instead, and what the category page should say at the top. If the shop’s revenue already comes from Google product and category rankings, that is keyword and rank tracking, the different job described above, and a separate question from what ChatGPT and Perplexity say.

Using Semrush and OperStack together, or moving the AI part over

A team can keep Semrush for SEO research and add Watch at $35 monthly for recurring ChatGPT and Perplexity reports and edits. There is some overlap in AI observations, so give each report a purpose. Before removing a toolkit, preserve its history and check the engine coverage and reporting features your team uses.

Both tools publish MCP servers, which makes running them side by side easy. Semrush’s official remote server connects by OAuth or API key and exposes its SEO API, Trends API and read-only Projects data, spending API units; Starter and Pro+ include 50,000 units. AI Visibility prompt data is not listed among its data sources. OperStack’s server is free and needs no account. Its five tools score a site out of 100, compare two to four sites on one scale, test an llms.txt file and its links, and read or verify your own AI visit counter. Connect both in the same Claude or Cursor session and you can pull keyword volumes from one and a rival comparison from the other in a single conversation. Setup steps for Claude Code, Claude desktop and web, ChatGPT on a paid plan with developer mode, Cursor, VS Code with GitHub Copilot, Windsurf and Zed are on the MCP page.

Moving the AI part over takes four steps:

  1. Run the free check on your own site. You get three live ChatGPT answers, the names in them and the paragraph for any page that lacks an opening answer.
  2. Start Watch. The first seven days cost nothing; the card is taken at checkout.
  3. Read the first Watch report next to what your Semrush AI dashboard shows that week, and decide which of the two your team would actually act on.
  4. Cancel only the AI part in Semrush, and time it. Semrush says add-ons are removed through its Contact Form, while a whole subscription goes through the Cancellation Form with a confirmation link that must be clicked within 24 hours. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the committed term. Monthly plans are not refunded, so do it before the renewal date.

What our scores say about the size of the editing task

The 496 scored websites in the OperStack early sample had an average score of 70 and a median of 73 on 25 September 2026. Those summaries describe our checker and sample. They cannot tell a business how much revenue an edit will generate, or how its score compares with a Semrush metric. Full study: 731 checks.

We examined small-business websites in law, property and dental services across the US, UK, Australia and Canada. The sample was not a random survey of all business websites. A total can direct attention to findings, but it should not substitute for reading them.

Score group in our early sampleWebsitesShare, rounded
Below 7017235%
From 70 through 89320, calculated65%
At least 904Less than 1%

The middle row is calculated by subtracting 172 and 4 from 496. Rounding means the displayed percentages do not need to add to exactly 100. The table describes a distribution of scores, not a distribution of businesses that would benefit from buying a particular subscription.

Use the score to select a review task. A missing date, an unclear business identity and a blocked crawler are different findings, requiring different evidence and different people. Improving a total by adding unnecessary text can make the page less useful even if a mechanical threshold is met.

For a team paying for Semrush, preserve its research metrics in their own report. Watch can add the current page findings and a proposed edit without pretending those numbers share a scale. Our owned-site examples provide context for the method; your before-and-after record should show what actually changed on your site.

Our own site on the same check: oper-stack.com scores 93 out of 100 over 10 pages, measured on 7 October 2026. The number is measured again on every build of this site and never typed by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Does Semrush show who ChatGPT recommends instead of my business?
Partly. Semrush's Competitor Research compares you with up to four competitors and lists prompts where they are cited and you are not, and its AI Visibility Score is benchmarked against competitors Semrush picks. OperStack lists every business ChatGPT named in your place, by name, and the free check sorts them into competitors, not-competitors such as portals, and names it could not identify. Watch repeats that for ten buyer questions every week, in ChatGPT and Perplexity.
What is the cheapest Semrush plan that tracks AI prompts?
On 3 October 2026 it was the AI Visibility Toolkit bought on its own: $99 a month for 25 prompts, one domain and AI checks on up to 100 pages, with no free trial. Among the bundled plans, Starter (SEO + AI Search) at $199 a month includes 50 prompts tracked daily. OperStack Watch costs $35 a month or $299 a year, and the first seven days are free.
Is the Semrush AI Visibility Checker free?
Yes, three checks a day without an account. It shows a score from 0 to 100, mentions, citations and a split by platform, drawn from Semrush's stored database of prompts and responses rather than questions you write. The OperStack free check also needs no signup, but it asks ChatGPT three buyer questions live, reads up to ten of your pages and writes an opening paragraph for any page that lacks one.
Can I get a refund on a monthly Semrush plan?
Not according to Semrush's refund policy: monthly subscriptions and renewals are not refundable. The one-time 7-day money-back offer covers only a first annual subscription or a first add-on bought by card on semrush.com, asked for in writing. With OperStack Watch you pay nothing if you cancel within the first seven days; after that you are not charged again, and periods already paid are not refunded.
Does OperStack have keyword or backlink data?
No. OperStack has no keyword database, no search volumes, no backlink index and no rank tracking. It measures whether AI systems can read and quote your pages, asks ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask (Watch adds Perplexity), records who is named instead of you, and writes the text to change. Teams that need keyword and link data keep a suite for that work and use OperStack for the AI answer question.
Do Semrush and OperStack work inside Claude or Cursor?
Both publish MCP servers. Semrush's official remote server runs on API units and exposes SEO, Trends and read-only Projects data; AI Visibility prompt data is not among its listed sources. OperStack's server is free with no account and has five tools, including scoring a site out of 100 and comparing two to four sites on one scale. Setup steps for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other clients are at oper-stack.com/mcp/.
Is Semrush worth it just for AI visibility?
Semrush offers a standalone AI Visibility Toolkit at $99 monthly, so buying its SEO suite is not required. OperStack Watch costs $35 and combines 10 weekly questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity, 3 rival comparisons, repeated page checks and suggested wording in recurring reports. Watch fits the owner who wants that continuing editing routine; compare prompt volume and engine coverage against your actual needs.
